Artist Statement

Development and decline can occur simultaneously throughout life. This can be seen in a variety of ways. For me, human growth is apparent and represented by physical, social and emotional maturation. My personal education and career aspirations have shown me that learning is a driving force behind my own growth. This has become apparent to me in that my perceptions and opinions have shifted overtime as I learn from new experience and opportunities. At the same time, I have become increasingly aware of human physical, social and psychological weakening. This is because I have recently been forced to witness the deterioration of several family members. Furthermore, I have begun to fear similar deterioration in myself as I begin to face my own challenges.
The degree to which a vessel is able to function as a utilitarian object serves as my metaphor for this binate in life. My forms are developed based on the readily observable life cycles of natural botanical life. While each vessel is representative of a different period, they all exist in the same space at the same time, allowing them to become representative of the dichotomy that is human growth and decline.
